Leslie (Tenor)
Leslie Tay is a Singaporean tenor whose remarkable versatility is evident in his
extensive stage experience in opera, oratorio, musical theater, theater, pop a
cappella and choral music.
His operatic repertoire includes the character tenor roles in operas like The
Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, I Pagliacci and Hansel and Gretel. He has
performed with companies like the Singapore Lyric Opera, Artyfakt, Brooklyn
Repertory Opera, Bronx Opera and Opera Manhattan.
He has sung the tenor solo in Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël and has participated
in masterclasses with Andrew Parrott, Krisztina Laki and Rachelle Gerodias. He
was also a finalist in the 2002 Young Singer of the Year Awards organized by the
Singapore Lyric Opera.
His non-operatic performances include creating roles in original musicals
written by well-known Singaporean playwright, Stella Kon. He has sung with the
Singapore Youth Choir and with a cappella group UpBeat, winner of the 2004
Singapore A Cappella Championship. As an actor, Leslie trained and performed
with the Singapore Repertory Theatre Young Company and Wild Rice’s Young and
Wild.
As an educator, Leslie has directed various choirs and has brought music and
drama to schools in Singapore and New York City with organisations such as the
Manhattan School of Music, the Singapore Lyric Opera, the A Cappella Society of
Singapore, the Singapore Armed Forces Choir and Theatreworks.
Leslie was recently awarded a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School
of Music where he was in the studio of Arthur Levy. He also holds a Bachelor of
Arts degree in English Literature from the National University of Singapore.
Upcoming engagements include Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos with the Brooklyn
Repertory Opera, the 2009 Hawaii Performing Arts Festival and Dicapo Opera
Theatre’s Resident Artist Program for the 2009-2010 season in New York City.
